PIANO AND SONG.
SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS. MODERN COMPOSITIONS. There was a large attendance of members and their friends in the Overseas Cluurooms last evening when the Auckland Society of Musicians gave its j monthly concert. The programme on this occasion was presented by associate and circle members and comprised musical works by modern composers. The concert opened with Arensky's "Silhouettes" ("La Coquette," "Polichinelle," "La Danseuse"), played a 6 a piano duo by Miss Mary Murphy and Miss Connie Martin, who gave, except for au occasional lack of synchronisation, a very creditable performance. Miss May' Mit- ! .hell sang pleasingly Malashkin's "Could ' I Hut Express in Song" and "See Where 'My Love a-Maying Goes" (Lidgey). Mi-s ! Sunday Mowbray played very artistically two piano solos, Preludes Nos. 1 and 2, Op. 10, by Scriabine. Miss Lilian Kennedy sang with excellent taste two lieder, "Maria Wiegielied" (Regcr) and "Modest Heart" (11. Wolf). An interesting piano solo, "Caprice" (York Bowen), was verv effectively played by M iss Reeky Pelhain. Good tone and balance were displayed in two part songs, ' Daffodils'' (Tinman) and "The Kerry Danc-e" (Molloy), sung by circle members conducted by Miss Amy Hansard. Mi»e Reka Patterson gave thoughtful readings of three modern «rc songs. "Lament of li-is" (Uantock), "Love Went a-Riding" (F. Bridge) and "Do Not Go, My Lov;" (Hageman). Two piano solos, "Carillon" an attractive poetic piece by N. O'Neill, and "Laughing Waters," by Bayntoti Power, were played well by Mrs. C. F. Fowler. Mr. Alfred Jeffries gave an acceptable rendition of Vaughan Williams' song "Vagabond." A piano solo, "Dance D'Olaff" (Pick-Mangiagalli), was given a neat and clean performance by Miss Pearl Wallace. Miss Lillian Mai ton was heard iu three songs, "Parting" (Grieg), "WiP o' the Wisp" (Spross) and "I Came With a Song" (La Forge), the latter providing her best performance. Two piano duos, Dvorak's "Humoreske in A Minor" and Debussy's "Golliwog's Cake Walk," were given in good style by Misses Joyce Sinitb and Netta Simich, although not always simultaneous. The accompanists were the Misses Mary Murphy, Pear] Wallace, Rita Haresnape, Gladvs Searrell and Dr. Phillips.
