RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

THE AUCKLAND MEETING. ] SURPRISE IN CHIEF EVENT. ; SUCCESS OF MUNGATOON. Tho spring meeting, of the Auckland Racing Olub was concluded at Ellerslie yesterday in showery weather. There ■was a fair attendance, and the course was in good order. During tho day the sum of £19,601 10/ was put .through tho totalisator, compared with' £18,175 10/ for tho corresponding day last .year, an increase of £1426. This made a total ■ for tho meeting of £46,459 10/, compared with £44,131 for the previous spring fixture, an increase of £2328 10/. After the Liverpool Handicap R. S. Bagby, trainer of Sir Abb, who ran second, entered a protest against the winner, Sinking Fund, on the ground of interference near the r>ost. The judicial committee dismissed the protest, and ordered tho deposit to "be forfeited. A Big Surprise. A large field faced the starter for the King Edward Memorial Handicap, and tho best backed were King Key (£450) and Spiral (£393), but a surprise was in store, the nineteenth favourite Mungatoon, carrying only £43, winning and paying over two score. Kiltowyn, who finished second, had £90 invested upon his chances. The field was bunched as they raced past the stands with King Rey, On Parade, Imamirit, Engi, Spiral, Kiltowyn, Tybalt and Sunee racing in a prominent position, but Engi then ran through to -the front and led along the back attended by Scotland, Kiltowyn, Mungatoon, Tybalt, On Parade, Spiral, King Rey, Baroscope and Imamint. Mungatoon then moved up on terms with Engi, and this pair led across the top from Baroscope, Tybalt, Kiltowyn, Gay Broney, Kelly, Spiral,. Imamint. and Gay Rose. Engi and Mungatoon showed the way into the straight, with Kiltowyn, Tybalt, Baroscope, Gay Broney, Spiral and Scotland following in that order. Once straightened up Mungatoon drew out to win by a length and a half from Kiltowyn, with King Rey finishing on a head away third. Spiral was fourth, then came Scotland, Silver Brier, Baroscope, Monanui, Sunee and Imamint. Sectional times: Two furlongs 26 3-ss, three 395. four 525, five 1.3 2-5, six 1.16, seven 1.28, one mile and a quarter 2.6. Only Three Finish. Six horses paraded for the Onehunga Steeplechase and the favourite division comprised Clarion Call ( £414), Cromwell (£413) and Gascelle (£267). The field raced in close attendance for two furlongs, and the order over the water jump was Clarion Call, Gascelle, Petrarch, Cardhu, Cromwell and Capella Abbey, but at the brush fence at tho mile post the lastnamed was nearly down, losing a lot of ground. Going up the hill the first time Gascelle had drawn out about twelve lengths clear of Clarion Call, Cardhu and Cromwell, with another gap of eight • lengths to Petrarch and Capella Abbey. Cromwell then ran up to Gascelle, and this pair led over the double from Clarion Call, Cardhu, Petrarch and Capella Abbey. At the stonewall Cardhu fell, and at the brush fence by the mile post Cromwell also dropped out of the contest. Gascelle led along the back six lengths clear of Clarion Call and Petrarch, with another gap to Capella Abbey, but at the fence by tho six-furlong post Petrarch came down, this leaving Gascelle and Clarion Call practically together in the lead and Capella Abbey a long way back. raced in this order until the last fence was negotiated, when Gascelle drew out to. beat ,Clarion . Call by three lengths, with ' eight lengths to Capella Abbey. The Juveniles. All started in the Musket Stakes, and when the totalisator was balanced most support was accorded Gallio ( £719) and Anion (£505), while Queen's Council carried only £287. Gay Streak and Dawning Light were smartest to find their feet, but Anion soon ran through to the front, and when they settled down was showing the way to Gay Streak, Dawning Light, Gallio, Queen's Council, Gay Chief and Queen Brierly. Anion was still in charge as they came round the home turn, being closely followed by Dawning Light, Gallio, Gay Streak, Gay Chief, Queen Brierly and Queen's Council. Once straightened up Gallio came through, and in a fine finish got the decision from the fast-finishing Queen's Council by'a neck, with Anion a head away. Gay Chief was fourth; then came Gay Streak, Queen Brierly and Dawning Light. Gay Defence Fails Again. A large field, paraded for the HobsonHandicap and'best backed were Gay Defence (£559), , Tray Bit (£413) and Royal Dance (£277). When the barrier rose Mungacre, Floodtide and Triune showed up and Mungacre led along the back from Tray . Bit, Royal Dance, Triune, Gloucester-and Scotch Nation Mungacre .and Tray -.Bit were still in charge asthey raeejl across the top, followed by Royal"Dance, Gloucester, Tin Lap, Triune, Gay Defence and Scotch Nation. Gloucester had run into second place behind Mungacre as they turned for home, with Tray Bit, Gay Defence and Royal Dance in close attendance. In the run home Tray Bit challenged and went on to 'win-;by a length from Royal Dance, with,Flo6dtide twt> lengths, and a half away third. Gay Defence, Mungacre, Scotch Nation, Vera Acre, Gloucester and Valise were next. The Concluding Event.
