MAORI'S OFFENCE.
STRUGGLE WITH CONSTABLE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) .! DARGAVILLE, this day. Before Messrs. A. C. Paul and A. C. Ball, J.P.'s, a Maori labourer, Ben Cash (28), was charged with drunkenness and assault. The evidence of Constable Du Temple was that Cash was creating a disturbance in Victoria Street on Saturday afternoon. He was in a drunken condition and was asked to go home. Later he. was further warned by witness. Cash, however, caught hold of the constable's legs and tripped him backwards. A struggle ensued on the footpath before the constable gained control and arrested his man. Cash, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness and was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for the assault.
