Ample Bank Credit for sound business expansion The trading banks of New Zealand are vitally interested in sound business expansion, as the volume of bank loans is a most important factor in bank profits. In discussions on business conditions in New Zealand, however, it is frequently suggested that the Banks have arbitrarily restricted credit. Quoted hereunder is an .extract from the evidence given by Professor Tocker before the New Zealand Monetary Committee, 1934:- " Figures show conclusively that over a "period of thirty years bank credit " has. expanded, in. rough correspondence "with the needs of production and trade. "I know of no evidence, statistical or "other, to support the. view that arbitrary " restriction of bank credit has ever been "the cause of depression in New Zealand, "and the view that it has been does not "agree either with bank practice or with "the published returns of our monetary " system." —-Inserted by the Associated Banks of New Zealand.
