CAULFIELD RACES.

Y,OUNG IDEA WINS GUINEAS. EPIGRAM IN FORM. DEAD-HEATS WITH JOURNAL. MELBOURNE, October 13. Showery weather prevailed for the opening of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's spring meeting at Caulfield yesterday. Brilliant Sun scored a comfortable win in the O'by Hurdles. He cost 1100 guineas as a yearling, and was a failure early, but has now registered four wins and a third in five starts over hurdles. The ex-New Zealander Calydon ran second, this being liis best Australian effort to date. Sir Geraint, who was bred by his owners, was prominent all the way in the Debutante Stakes, and gained a lucky win by a neck from Gilded Youth, who finished brilliantly. The early leader, Borneo, was a promising third. The New Zealander, Martinborough, finished sixth. Lady Mauve compensated her owner, Mr. A. Crofts, for Gilded Youth's defeat by capturing the fillies division of the Debutante Stakes with a lucky run on the rails. Slie cost 300 guineas as a yearling. Her trainer, F. \V. Hoysted, won the race last year with Matinee. Feldspar made a fine finishing run to beat the pacemaker Charles Fox and Marabou in the Caulfield Stakes. Synagogue was interfered with near the post, but lie was beaten at the time, although he may have secured third place.

Young Idea finished brilliantly to win the Caulfield Guineas. His trainer, Foulsham, has scored previously with Liberal and Avant Courier. Garrio continued his unlucky run of seconds. The Trump finished fast to beat Carnarvon for third. The early leader, Hadrian, was last home. Valiant Chief was never a possibility. A. Reed, rider of the winner, won previously on Bahnerino and Green Wave. .

Red# Ray finished strongly to defeat Yarrnmba, who also finished well, in the Herbert Power Stakes. Panto's third was a great effort, and he will appreciate the 111b drop in the Caulfield Cup. Greenhorn finished well, but Cape Morn faded.

A wonderful finish in the Toorak Handicap resulted in a dead-heat between Journal and Epigram, who raced together over the last half-furlong. Epigram's form' was a great improvement on his effort at Kyneton on Wednesday, when he was unplaced in a weak field.
