RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

THE SPRING MEETING. CALIENTE WINS CUP. PLATO THE FLYING HANDICAP. Beautiful weather favoured the Auckland Racing Club for the opening of their spring meeting at Ellerslio on Saturday. There was a good attendance, and the course was in excellent order. The racing was most interesting throughout, somo close finishes being provided. The Mitchofcon Cup was Avon by Caliente in record time for the race, while tho Flying Handicap was narrowly annexed by Plato from Spiral. The Great Northern Guineas went to tho outsider Entail, owned by his breeder, Mr. G. M. Currie, wliilo Streito, who won the Avondalo Stakes, accounted for the Welcome Stakes. During the day the sum of £20,858 was put through the ■machine, compared with £25,955 10/ for tho opening day last year, an increase of £902 10/. The Mitchelson Cup. A large field of 15 paraded for the Mitchelson Cup, and most money came for King Rey ( £787) and Kiltowyn (£013), while Calicnte and Tybalt carried £343 and £203 respectively. Rust and Gay Rose were the smartest to find their feet, and Gay Rose piloted the field past the stands from Baroscope, Knight of Australia, Enge, King Rey, Caliente, Monanui, Tybalt, Kiltowyn, Rust, Sunce, Silver Brier, Mungatoon, Arctie King and Kelly. Along the back Baroscope ran through to the front, otherwise there was not much chango among tho leaders, and Baroscope was in charge across the top from Caliente, Knight of Australia, Monanui, Silver Brier, King Rey, Enge and Kiltowyn. Caliente then took charge and led into the straight from Baroscope, Knight of Australia, Monanui, Silver Brier, Enge and King Rey. Tybalt then made a run from the back, but could not reach Caliente, who vent on to beat him by three-quarters of a length, with Baroscope only a neck away third. King Rey was fourth; then came Sunee, Knight of Australia, Rust, Kiltowyn, Kelly, Enge, Mungatoon and Silver Brier. The sectional times: —Four furlongs, 535; five, 1.5 4-5; six, 1.18 1-5; seven, 1.30; one mile, 1.42 4-5; one mile and a half, 2.32 3-5. Jockey Fined. H. Wiggins, the rider of King Rey in the Mitchelson Cup, was fined £2 for attempting to take up a wrong position at tho barrier. The Favourite Falls. Seven horses faced the starter in the Hunters' Steeplechase, and the best backed were Clarion Call (£771), Gascillo (£536) and Ardmanning (£510). At the start Clarion Call was the first prominent, and he led along the back the first time from Gascille, Bells of Bowii Senrjavcb, Petrarch, Zune Grey and Ardmamring, but at the second fence Clarion Call fell, and the order up the hill the first time was Gascille, Bells of Bow,"Semiarch, Ardmanning, Petrarch and Zane Grey. There was no change when the field came round to the double, but Petrarch was In charge along the back the last time from Gascille, Bells of Bow, Semiarch, Ardmanning and Zane Grey. Zane Grey began to improve his position at this stage, and was in second place behind Petrarch going up the hill, with Ardmanning, Gascille, Bells of Bow and Semiarch not far away. At the top of the hill Zane Grey made a faulty jump, and the order into the straight Petrarch, Semiarch, Ardmanning, Zane Grey and Gascille. Semiarch fell at the last fence, and in a good run home Gascille came again to gain the decision by a length and a half from Petrarch, with Zane Grey three-quarters of a length away. Ardmanning and Bells of Bow were next. When Clarion Call fell in the Hunters' Steeplechase his rider, A. Jenkins, suffered a broken collarbone, and was sent to the Auckland Hospital. The Juveniles. After his success in tho Avondale Stakes the public installed Stretto favourite for tho Welcome Stakes with £1041, next in- request being Moquette (£827) and Gallio (£595). Gallio was first out and led across the top from Anion, Stretto, Moquette, Queen's Council, Ditwning Light and Gay Streak. Gallio was first into the straight from Stretto, Queen's Council, Moquette and Anion, but once in line for the judge Stretto soon settled tho opposition to win nicely by two lengths and a half from Gallio, who was a length and a half in front of Anion. Queen's Council was fourth, then finished Moquette, Gay Chief, Dawning Light, Gay Streak and .Viracious. Race Divided. Owing to the number of horses starting in the Gordon Handicap exceeding the safety number the race was ruij in two divisions. The favourites were Gay Defence and Solaria, carrying £800 and £489 respectively. Before going out for the first division Gemland caused a lot of trouble in the birdcage, and D. Craddock was substituted for his apprentice rider. The horse again played up at tho start, and eventually . the field was sent away without hiim. Teak and Bellkyrian were the smartest out, but Tray Bit led across the top from Bellkyrian, Mungacre, Scotch Nation, Trouvaille, Solas and Solaria. Mungacre was first round the bend from Tray Bit, Scotch Nation, Trouvaille and Bellkyrian, but Solaria then challenged and went on to win by half a length from Scotch Nation, who beat Tray Bit ,by a ncck. Trouvaille, Triune, Armacourt, Jewelled Girdle and Thrust were next.

lii the second division Killadar, Whirling, Gay Defence and Royal Dance were prominent early, and the last named moved up fast to lead across the top from Gloucester, Gay Defence, Ballymoney, Wahine Reilii, Whirling, Racette ancl Etcetera. Gloucester was first into the straight, closely followed by Gay Defence, Wahine Reihi, Royal Dance, Whirling, Kacette, Killadar and Mazir. ground at tho start, and Solomon, Sinking Fund and Gipsy Moth .were most prominent when the barrier rose. The order into the straight was Sinking Fund, Gipsy Moth, Imamint, Plato, Solomon, Gay Lap and Nun Nicer, and in a great finish Plato got the decision from the fast-finishing Spiral by half a head, with Sinking Fund only a neck away third.
