LAST OF THE CENTRE POLES.
There was a time when a tramway centrepole was a symbol of urban progress. Residents of a district which had long needed a tramway service would know, when the centre-poles were upraised along the route, that at last their needs were to be met. When erected the poles had an aspect of permanency, and few people imagined that one day the symbol of progress would become a menace to life and limb. But the internal combustion engine, which has changed so many things, has caused that change too. Fast-moving motor traffic has made the centrepoles a hindrance, an obstruction and a peril. On Monday the Transport Board removed the last of the centre-poles in Auckland, and it is to be congratulated upon the completion of a work which will make our streets safer , f° r motorists and pedestrians alike.
