THE STINGLESS BEES.
To the seedless raisin and. the pipless grape-fruit it is possible to add the stingless bee —the painstaking product of Mr. Jay Smith, of Indiana, who has devoted his life to bee research. The bee without a sting has many valuable positive qualities. He is a biggei bee, he can travel greater distances, he can build bigger honeycombs, and he gathers more honey. A swarm or stingiess bees, it is said, yields 001b more honey than a swarm of the ordinary bees, and the queens are more fertile. Ordinary bees travel remarkable distances; they work as far as eight miles from the hive. Mr. Jay Smith aims at producing bees travelling twice as far. He also aims at increased size, because the biggei insect can probe nectarines beyond the reach of the ordinary insect.
