FANCY DRESS DANCE.
MANGERE SCHOOL CHILDREN. The annual children’s fancy dress ball of the Mangere East district was hold in the local public hall on Friday night, under the'auspices of the Mangere East' School committee. This function has now been held for a number of years, and the task of Mrs. Grinter and Mrs. Dyer, who acted as thc judges of the varied collection of fancy costumes, was exceedingly difficult. Mr. E. W. B. Caddy, the headmaster of the school, and his staff trained the children for the grand march and the fancy dances, tripping dance, double curtsy waltz, skating dance, finger polka, hunston house, a hunting we will go, and rendezvous, the last-named being a story told in song and dance. Before calling on Mrs. Massey to present the children with their prizes, Mr. F. G. Massey, chairman of the school committee, thanked thc judges and members of thc school staff and also the parents for their work.
The awards were as follows: —Girls, under seven, Betty Prangley (doll in box), 1; special prize, Julia Prattle (easy stitch). Boys, under seven, Murray McFlynn (highwayman), 1; Peter Kain (Chinaman); special, Murray Belcher (Spanish troubadour), extra. Girls, under ten, Valerie McCullum (powder
and patches); Amy Elkington (seeds), special. Boys, under ten, William Leslie (tea), 1. Girls, ten years and over, Moyra Jackson (goldfish), 1; Amy .Smith (Victorian lady in green), special. Boys, ten years and over, Ray Fothergill (golliwog), 1; Billy Doblp (soldier boy), special. Special prizes for homemade costumes were received by Clare Green (Phinket nurse), Eric Stone (paper parcel). Mrs. J. Gillies, of Otahuliu, was the accompanist. Bouquets were presented by Mrs. I. G. Massey to Mrs. Grinter and Mrs. Dyer, Airs. J. Gillies, Mrs. Burns, Miss Murray, Mr. Caddy and Mr. Baisy. Thc members of the school committee were: Messrs. F. G. Massey (chairman), Tylden, Doble, Nash, Belcher and Cutfield. Supper was.served to the children. Among those present were: Mesdames A. K. Belcher, Kidd, McFlynn, Macmillan, I. G. -Massey, W. L. Pirie, Burns, Fountain, A. Prangley, L. Prangley, Chapman, W. W. Massey, Penman, Jackson, Bastock,'Kirkbride, Smith, Ellison, Furniss, Dr. G. Rowley, Misses Ridd, Breinuar, Hagan (2), Chapman, Timms and J. Harvie.
