THE POLICE FORCE.
WHO IS QUONG FOO? QUESTIONS IN PARLIAMENT. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. In a general discussion on the police estimates yesterday, Mr. Schramm (Labour, Auckland East) said that there should be more motor vehicles purchased for the police, as fast travel often meant the apprehension of criminals. A vote for that purpose would not be challenged by the Opposition. Mr. T. H. McCombs (Labour, Lyttelton) a«ked if the Government had done anything in regard to appointing women constables.
Mr. R. MeKeen (Labour, Wellington South), alluding to the vote for temporary police officers, made reference to the special enrolments that had been made of citizens some time ago. He understood that a Chinaman had been appointed in Wellington. 'l’he Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Savage, wanted to know what was to be done for Mrs. Heeps, the wife of the constable who was shot by a native when he was attempting to make an arrest near Morrinsville. He said he noticed that £lOOO was on the Estimates for Mrs. Heeps, and she was entitled to that. It was a “thank you for nothing.”
Mr. R. Scruple (Labour, Wellington East) wanted to know why Quong Foo had been appointed to the police force. (Laughter). In reply, the Minister of Justice, Mr. Cobbe, said that the member for Wellington East had an extraordinary imagination. In addition to the £lOOO voted Mrs. Heeps, she was receiving a superannuation allowance and further consideration would be given her case. She would be fairly treated. Women police, he said, would be appointed when the Government was satisfied that they were necessary. The temporary police provided for had nothing to do with the citizens force that had been enrolled.
