OPEN LINES.
RAILWAYS IMPROVEMENTS. NEW TERMINAL FACILITIES.' (By Telegraph.— Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The net expenditure on railways — improvements and additions to open lines —out of th - Public Works Fund for the year ended March 31 last was £154,973, to which lias to be added £500 as charges for Public Works administration costs, stated the Miniater of Public Works, Mr. J. Bitchener, when presenting the Public Works Statement in Parliament this afternoon. Practically the whole of the expenditure was incurred in connection with the new terminal facilities in Wellington. Considerable work was also done on roading. Satisfactory progress was made on the electrification of the WellingtonI'aekakariki area, the erection of poles to carry the 33,000-volt transmission lines being carried on throughout the year. All drilling and grouting preparatory to the erection of overhead gear in the tunnels was completed, and sections of the 11,000-volt armoured cables had been laid.
