BENEFIT CONCERT.
HELPING EX-SERVICEMEN.
A benefit concert arranged by the Friendly Road broadcasting station was held at the Town Hall on Wednesday in aid of the ex-servicemen in the Mental Hospital. A procession of over 1000 returned soldiers marched to the concert from the foot of Queen Street, preceded by the St. Andrew's Pipe Band. There was a large attendance at the concert. The Rev. C. G. Serimgeour, director of the Friendly Road station, said that the concert was arranged to raise funds for the men who gave the best years of their lives for their country. The fact that an entertainment of this nature should be necessary was not creditable to the community.
The programme included Maori songs and hakas by a concert party from the Akarana Maori Association. Other popular items were contributed by the Waterside Workers' Band, the Lyric Four, the Stevens Sisters, Madame Cornwall, Gladys Stormont. Mrs. Shaw, and Messrs. Dudley Wrathall, A. Ripley, Robert Simmers, E. Thomas, Alan McElwain, Les O'Leary and W. Roe.
