AID FOR EX-PRISONERS.
INCREASED GRANT SOUGHT. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. A plea for an increased grant to discharged prisoners' aid societies was made in the House this morning by Messrs. M. J. Savage, F. W. Schramm and A. S. Richards, Auckland Labour members, when the Prisons Estimates were under consideration. N In reply, the Minister of Justice, Mr. Cobbe, said that £GSOO had been distributed last year as accumulated earnings. No country in the world treated its prisoners better than did New Zealand. If the grant was unreasonable ho would consider an increase and would see that prisoners were given a chance. The fact that prisons' population was decreasing was a sign of a reduction ill crime. The amount voted is £105.
