WHARF ON FIRE.

STANLEY BAY OUTBREAK.

SAVED BY VEHICULAR FERRY.

Serious damage to the Stanley Bay wharf was prevented by the prompt action of Captain L. G. Clark, of the vehicular ferry Goshawk, who early this morning saw that the wharf was on fire.

The Goshawk left Devonport at 1.10 this morning for the Eastern Reclamation wharf. A few minutes later Captain Clark noticed the glow of flames from the end of the Stanley Bay wharf. He at once diverted his course "towards the fire, which had a fair hold when he arrived. A' hose was run out and the fire was sopoi under control. •>

There Was a strong wind blowing at the time and but for Captain Clark's prompt action' the whole wharf might have been destroyed. Damage was done to the decking, which in parts was burnt through. The dcck-house was not damaged.

On returning to port Captain Clark notified the Devonport Fire Brigade, which sent the light fire engine to the wharf, but the fire was safely out and their services were not needed.
