TAKANINI NOTES.

FLOOD TIDE'S EFFORTS,

HORSES FOR PAEROA,

Although unsighted in the Maiden Plate at Avondale, Flood Tide ran quite a fair race in the Guineas on the second day; finishing fifth after taiPij? the field in the early stages. Haut Monde and Velocipede were two who finished behind him, and while this may not be generally accepted as a reliable guide, it was an indication that the Tidal gelding may produce something like the form expected of him, while it also tended to confirm the belief that he would be better suited by a longer distance of ground.

Master Rex' was produced on a couple of occasions at Avondale for. a like number of defeats. In his final gallop prior to the meeting the Diacquenod gelding bled badly and while his racing did not result in any further evidence of the trouble his future prospects mainly depend upon how the ailment affects him.

Ballymoney was another who had two failures recorded against him at the same meeting, though'" he was Considered unlucky in not being in the money on the second day. Ballymoney may not have improved a great deal since last season, but still possesses the necessary speed to find him a winner where the class is slightly weaker than at Avondale. Although beaten out of a jilaee' iu the Avondale Stakes, Sure! la was by no means disgraced, as he was l a sufferer in a bad dispatch ..from the barrier and in the circumstances did well to finish so close to the placed division. He has developed into a handsome colt who seems assured of a good future. Hikutaia was fancied in some quarters for the hack mile on the second day at Avondale. but he failed to flatter his supporters. The Speardance gelding looks all the better for his racing and his appearance suggests that he may bo much harder to beat the next time he is produced in a middle distance hack event. Two stud matrons were sent away on Monday, Ballymoy If., owned by Mr. E. R. Davis, being railed to Cambridge, where she is to visit the reccnt importation Foxbridge. Marshland, who has produced a likely-looking filly to Tea Tray, who is now a two-year-old, has been sent to the Mardella stud, where she is to be mated with Vaals. Plenty of Dash. Since his two excellent efforts in the handicap events at Avccidale, Engi has been throwing much dash into his work and if anything appeal's to be in even better fettle than ever. There is no doubt about this gelding's ability and he will be unlucky if lie fails to win a really good handicap, in the near future. G. Morse, who has had anything but a good run of luck during the last 12 months, looks as though he will soon be rewarded with a win with Merry Lapy who ran right up to track form when he finished fourth in the Hack Hurdles at Avondale. A repetition of this effort will find the Lapidary gelding dangerous the next time he is produced in similar company. \ Red Hawk was with the leader to the entrance of the straight in the Maiden Plate. Seven furlongs was expected to be beyond J lis powers at the moment, but lie displayed enough speed to indicate that he will be a prospect in a maiden event. , W. H. Patterson's maiden High Quality continues to* do well in his work and in all sprinting tasks has shaped well. This robust gelding has shown considerable promise a"nd if he produces track form in public will soon earn distinction. Thangi Lamba is to have her first race as a three-year-old in the maiden race at Paeroa on Saturday. She is a fit filly, who has shown plenty of speed in her preparation and may be seen to advantage. She is engaged in the Great Northern Guineas and her form next week-end will give a guide as to her prospects in the classic event; Nun Nicer was produced in fine fettle for his Avondale engagements and he was unlucky in not winning a double at the meeting. He made a game effort to win with 9.4 on the Monday and was not disgraced in being beaten half a head by a good one in Ivahapa. Nun Nicer's win in the Champion Hack Plate would have been particularly pleasing to his owner, Major P. Kerr-Sm'iley. Since resuming work The Hiker lias done well as far as his preparation has advanced. He bears an improved appearance and this is a dashing jumper who should win further races providing he survives a preparation. Should Again Go Well. Tin Lap was not fancied for Avondale, but scored a convincing win among the hacks. This was in direct contrast to her track form, which had not been •illuminating, but her success points to her again being Ward to beat at Paeroa. Emancipation is again in work following a short period of idleness due to meeting with an accident to his hock. The injured limb has made good progress toward recovery and he should not be long in reaching racing condition. Among others doing serviceable work are Lap Up, who has recently resumed after a spell, and Wait and See, who has brightened up after coming back from a spell in rather lean condition. Heedful and Ebb and Flow are doing satisfactorily, while Glenaere has been working very well. The Romeo—lsingarch gelding bears a bright appearance, while no fault can ie found with the condition of Anion, who made a promising debut by running second in the Avondale Stakes. The Gay Shield—Kitty Barlowe colt has done very well, but the Lapidary Spadona filly is not being given any strenuous work, as she has not done quite as well as her connections would wish. Huskie is to be schooled, while King Ara and King Flight are doing satisfactorily.
