SAFEGUARDED.
DOMINION CHEMISTS.
ADVENT OF BRITISH FIRM.
PETITION TO PARLIAMENT.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, Wednesday
An important English firm of manufacturing and retail chemists proposes to establish business in New Zealand, and a petition is before a Parliamentary committee from chemists' employees asking that the existing businesses should be safeguarded against undue competition. In the House yesterday two members in questions to the Government showed a similar anxiety. Mr. J. A. Nash (Palmerston North) asked if the Prime Minister will investigate the legislation dealing with such firms in Australia, and take the necessary steps to prevent the establishment of "a monopoly, which would mean disaster to the staffs of chemists' shops in New Zealand. In an urgent question the Prime Minister was asked by Mr. H. Atmore (Independent, Nelson) if the Government intends to protect the chemists of New Zealand by legislation from the operations of a concern with such huge capital that the results must be overwhelmingly prejudicial to existing businesses. The 1 Prime Minister replied that this subject was before a committee of the House, and when its report) was available a decision would be given.
