WAR HEROINE HONOURED.
"A French Edith Cavell" is the description givon of Madame Trude, formerly matron at the General Hospital at Cambrai, For over two years during the war this heroic woman's life was in constant jeopardy owing to the help she continually afforded to French poilus who had escaped from Gorman prisons. She 'fed, lodged and herself guided over two hundred men back to the French lines. She was more fortunate, lioxVever, than our English heroine. It was on a minor charge that the Germans finally arrested her arid she was sentenced to ten years' hard labour in a German fortress. She was released after two years, but the full story of her courageous behaviour during the war has only lately been made public. The French Government has just conferred on her a unique honour. She ia the only woman to receive "la carte du combattant," which is almost exclusively reserved for French soldiers who served in the firing line. Her other decorations include many English and French medals, including the Croix de Guerre with palm.
