LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
N.Z. CONGRATULATED. ARRIVAL OF H. T. LILBURNE. Interest in the Australian team's tour has been intensified by Now Zealand's signal success in the first Test. This morning the following cablegram was received from Mr. H. R. Miller, secretary of the Australian Board of Control: "Please convey your readers my sincere congratulations your team's wonderful success.- Am pleased they put on such telling football. If you win the 'Ashes' you will be high on the football map. Our boys, however, can take a licking and will come up smiling. You cannot keep a good team down."
H. T. Lilburne, the Union All Black, who recently joined up to play under the auspices of the Wellington Rugby League, arrived in Auckland this morning.
The Australian team carried out light training at Carlaw Park this morning in preparation for to-morrow's second Test, which is expected to draw a record mid-week attendance. Lilburne to Play. 11. T. Lilburne, the ex-All Black, will play for New Zealand in the second Test against the Australians at Carlaw Park to-morrow. Lilburne arrived from Wellington this morning, and will replace S. Prentice, who is suffering from an injury to a leg, in the fiveeighths line. The ex-All Black should lend thrust to the New Zealand chain. Recently he transferred his athletic affections to the League code and, playing for the Combined team against the Australians last Wednesday, he revealed excellent form. Prentice has been playing splendidly and on his form could not have been dropped from the Test side, but his defection owing to injury has given Lilburne his opportunity. The latter was one of the All Blacks' star backs on tile Australian tour last season, and this year played in the All Black trial games.
