DESTROYERS SENT.
Protection of Japanese at Swatow. QUARREL OVER ' TAXATION. (Received 11.30 a.m.) TOKYO, September 30. Japan lias sent seven destroyers to Swatow to protect Japanese refusing to pay taxes on the ground that their imposition is arbitrary. Japan has also demanded that the authorities refrain from illegalities against Japanese, including imprisonment for the distraining of possessions owing to nonpayment of taxes.
FLAUNTING POWER. French Minister's Astonishing Attitude. REFUSAL TO LAUNCH WARSHIP (Received 11 a.m.) PARIS, September 30. "I do not think the hour well chosen to appear to flaunt naval Power however justified as far as France is concerned," said M. Pietri, Minister of Marine, who announced his decision not to participate at the' launching of the warship Dunkerquc ('20,000 tons). He added: "These are times when action should dispense with noise." M. Pietri's decision has astonished France, which was eagerly awaiting the launch of France's first post-war capital ship.
