CHILDREN'S FUND.
SALE OF SPECIAL STAMPS.
CAMPAIGN" INAUGURATED.
Opened by the Governor-General, Lord Galway, in a speech which was broadeast from Wellington last night and relayed by IYA, this year's health stamp campaign, to provide funds for the institution and maintenance of children's health camps, commences to-day. Commending the objcct of the campaign, Lord Galway said that the proceeds, a penny from each stamp sold, would be handed over without deduction to the organisations administering children's health camps. Although it seemed that the general standard of health among New Zealand children was very satisfactory, there were still many who were handicapped by their environment and who could not, unless they received friendly help, enjoy all the things that were regarded as essential to happy childhood. It was on their behalf that lie appealed to the public. While the health camps had already given happiness and a better start in life to thousands, the work had been developed only far enough to show that with the resources now at the command of the various organisations, no more than the fringe of the problem could be approached. Committees had been set up, however, in all parts of the Dominion, and offered opportunities for personal service. On the suggestion of the Minister of Health, Sir Alexander Young, who had officially endorsed the campaign, the money would be expended on the maintenance at health camps of children selected by school mcdical officers or medical practitioners. In small districts it would be more beneficial to send needy children immediatsly to existing camps rather than to spend the money on buildings and equipment.
"I feel sure that the community will realise that there is a very real need for extension of the health camp work," his Excellency concludcd, "and that the results—in increased good health, in greater happiness to many thousands of children, our future citizens —will commend the campaign so strongly to your generosity that the objective of £10,000 will quickly be reached."
