TRAMWAY WORKERS.
TURNERS AND FITTERS.
5/- INCREASE OF WAGES.
A report on the working conditions of 43 turners stnd fitters at the Mount Roskill workshops was presented to a meeting of the Auckland Transport Board this morning by the manager, Mr. A. IS. Ford. It showed that tlm men worked 40 hours a week instead of the 44 hours before the rationing. "As the fitters and turners have been rationed for some four years, and have carried out this work in good spirit during that time, I am of the opinion that their case should receive special consideration," stated the manager. "To increase their wages by 5/ per week, making a total of £5 per week as against the other skilled workers' £o 0/11, would cost an additional £5485/ per annum." The chairman, Mr. 11. G. It. Mason, said that these men had had what practically amounted to a double cut, in having their time rationed as well as their wages reduced. On a weekly basis they were receiving less than the other workers. Mr. E. .T. Phelan said that there should be one award to cover all the men working in the workshops. It was decided to adopt the manager's report, and increase the wages of the men concerned as suggested in the report.
