A BROWNIE BIRTHDAY PARTY.

Dear Wendy,— As you were unable to a-ttend tlie St. John's brownie party on August 10 I will tell you about it, for it was a great success. The party commenced at 2.30, so St. John's brownies had to be there at 2 p.m. to decorate their rooms. By the time they had finished this it was 2.30, so we went and joined tho other brownies. First of all we formed two lines, after which we numbered off. Then Tawny would call a number and the two brownies whose number it wa-s would fold their arms, hop on their right leg up to the other person and try to make them put down their foot. When the game was over Tawny told us to go into her room, while Captain showed-the other brownies another game. Once in the room St. John's brownies hastily put on their rendezvous dresses to do the dance that they did in the ballroom scene of Cinderella and Prince Charming. When this had been done Captain ordered the other brownies to stop their game.. Then, going up to the piano, Tawny played the music for the people in the ballroom scene to get into their places, after which we commenced the dance. As soon as it was finished Tawny told us to go outside. As soon as we had changed back into our clothes Tawny told us that we were going to have a. treasure hunt. Everybody jumped with excitement at the words treasure hunt. Getting out our notebooks, we started on our way. Although T was not in the group that found the treasure, it took

the lucky group nearly half an hour to find it. By this time the party was ready, so we took our seats and commenced to eat. When we had all finished we formed a ring, for prizegiving was to be next. As soon as there was a good ring, Tawny brought into our midst a table, on which was the birthday cake, and all the badges that the brownies were to get that day. When these had been distributed the enrolment came. In fact, so many people got enrolled that I don't think I can remember them all. After these had .been given Tawny said, "Get ready for ceremonial." Immediately everybody went and hid. Then Tawny called out, "Tu-whit, tu-wliit, tu-who-o-o." As soon as she had said that, the seconders, Lily Cannal, Zeta Jaycock and I carne tripping forward with the carpet and the magic pool. Laying them down on the floor, we danced round them sinking: — Our fairy ring we will prepare, So we have laid our carpet there.

Our shining pool there, too, you see, To help us better Brownies be.

As soon as we had said that in came our sixers with the totem while w( said:— Our sixers now the totem bring; We call the brownies to make the ring id When the sixers had joined the • rins. n we clapped our hands, crying, "Brownies )r c< pme and make our fairy ring." Imme i- diately the brownies came from theii Js hiding places and joined the sixers atu ;e seconders, after which we danced arounc !_ saying:— d Where we have been no one can find, 11 For never a trace we leave behind; •c Only the people we've helped to-day II Know that a brownie has passed thir ie way. 3 > Having said this, we knelt down 01 r our right knee, after which Tawnv n said:— r "Brownies, are the gnomes here?" '> "Yes, we are hero," said the gnomes 8 standing tip and bowing. ~ "Then tell lis what you can do,' J; replied Tawny. With that the gnomes formed a rin; and, dancing round, sang:— r Here you see the laughing gnomes 1; Helping mother in our homes. e "Brownies," said Tawny, "are the i pixies here?" r "les, we are here," said the pixies i standing up and bowing. > "Then tell us what you can do," said 1 Tawny. 3 Forming a ring, the pixies danced ; round, singing:— Look out —we're the jolly pixies, Helping people when in fixes. ! When they had knelt down agaii . Tawny said: — "Brownies are the imps here?" "Yes, we are here," said the imps standing up and bowing as the othei patrols did. "Then tell us what you can do," said Tawny. Forming a ring the imps danced round singing: We're the ever helpful imps, Quick and quiet as any shrimps. When they had done that we all stood up and tripped round singing: We're the brownies here's our aim, Send a hand and play the game. As soon as we had done that we knelt down and pretended to lie asleep while the guides surrounded us. Then some brownies, who wore Hying up to guides awoke and said: "Tawny, who are those girls with blue ties on?" "They are the guides of your company," replied Tawny. "May we jfoin them ?" said Lily, Olwyn Joyce and Elva. "Yes," replied Tawny, "you are quite old enough now. Brownies, wake up some of our brownies are leaving us. Cai, we give them the grand howl?" With that the brownies woke up and gave the grand howl, which was, "Towhit, to-whit, to-who-o-o-o. After thai the brownies flew up to captain. Well as the day is slowly elrawing to aji end I must close, but before I do so I Vill tell you the. names of all the badges 1 have got. They are: Enrolment, second class,- first class, needlewoman, house orelerly, toymaker, collector, writer three service stars and the patrol badge. A Loving Reader, Bonnie Filkington, age 10.
