NOTES IN PASSING.

A Text.—''The preaching of the Cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto lis who are saved it is the power of God."—'St. Paul.

An English principal, Dr. Thomas Phillips, of Cardiff, suggests that the Gospel of John may be a collection of sermons preached by him during his ministry in Epliesus.

Wise Sayings.—"Thero never will be any to-morrow for the man who wastes to-day." "Every great and commanding moment in the annals of the world is the triumph of some enthusiasm." "Men sometimes cannot help that their lives are defeated, but they can help that they are not wasted."

The -continuation committee of the World Conference on Faith and Order met recently in Denmark. Nineteen countries and 20 different Churches were represented by about CO members. The Archibishop of York, Dr. Temple, describes the meeting as "an oasis of sanity in the desert of a world's madness—a eource of refreshment and tranquillity for that world's distracted soul." The next World Conference will be held in Edinburgh in August, 1937.

A Canadian preacher who occupied the pulpit of the City Temple, London, during August has some interesting things to say about its former famous minister, Dr. Joseph Parker, in the monthly magazine of the church. Here is one of them. "Who is your minister now 1" Dr. Parker asked my father once. "A young man just out of college," was the reply. "And you are his senior deacon?" My father admitted , that responsibility. "Then," said Dr. Parker, "I hope his senior deacon is very gentle and kind and understanding in his intercourse with the 'young man just out of college.''"

St. Andrew's, the Presbyterian motherchurch of Auckland, has issued the first number of a serial magazine bearing the title, "The Pioneer." It is a very creditable production and the following extracts from the opening article arc indicative of the optimism and enthusiasm of the minister and his officebearers: "St. Andrew's sends this little magazine to greet its lovers, friends and wellwishers and to assure them that thf» spirit of adventure is still alive and that 'old St Andrew's' is determined to play its part in the spiritual life of the city.

. . . Times have changed, but the fundamental spiritual needs of our highlycomplex civilisation are greater than ever and St. Andrew's is still needed in the very heart of official Auckland to bear witness to the things of the spirit."

The narrow band, woven of white lamb's wool, made to rest 011 the shoulders and to hang downwards before and behind in lappets, and known as the pallium, is an ecclesiastical vestment that was originally worn by the Pope. It is now bestowed by him on metropolitans and archbishops of the Catholic Church as a symbol of the jurisdiction delegated to them. The origin of the pallium is unknown. Forty-eight years ago it was received by the late Archbishop Redwood at the hands of Bltehop Luck, of Auckland. Bishop Brodie, of C'hristchurch, officiated at the rccent

investiture of his successor, Archbishop O'Shea, and placed the pallium on his shoulders.
