GIRL'S CLAN CLAIM.
A 16-year-old girl is to fight her claim to become chieftain of a Highland clan. She is Miss Catriona Mac Lean, of Ardgour, Argyllshire. Her father. Colonel Alexander H. Mac Lean, died five years ago, leaving no male issue, and bequeathed his estate to Catriona, his eldest daughter. The Clan Association refuses to accept her as the new chief, maintaining that a woman can only be chieftain if there is no suitable male heir in the direct line of succession. Many members favour the c-laim of Commander H. H. Mac Lean, a distant relative. The Hon. Mrs. Mac Lean. widow of the chieftain, stated that the matter was in the hands of her lawyers. "I maintain," she said, "that if my daughter is her father's heir, then sho automatically becomes chieftain."
