PEDESTRIAN RAILS.
BERLIN ACCIDENTS REDUCED. BERLIN, August 19. To reduce the number of street accidents caused by careless pedestrians Berlin has tried as an experiment the erection of low lattice guard-rails, to step over which into the road is a reminder of grave danger not only of a possible accident but of a possible fine.
At specially dangerous spots where these guards have been installed their success is attested by statistics now available. At one corner where an average of 214 accidents occurred in former years, as comparatively few as 125 took place since the new arrangement was made; at another, accidents were reduced from an average of 186 to no.
