THE ENGINEERING SCHOOL.

The report that Cabinet has decided to review the State grant to tho Auckland University College School of Engineering, but only for one year, will give some hope but little satisfaction to those who have been working to prevent tho school's extinction. Neither the staff nor the students can be expected to do their best work when they are to work with the knowledge that the end of tho institution may have been only postponed. The assurance of continuity is essential. If the case made out by tho College Council was strong enough to persuade Cabinet to renew the grant for one year it Was also sufficiently strong to evoke from Cabinet the declaration that the Engineering School has justified its existence, and that it will bo needed in the future no less than now. Through tho commendable efforts of Mr. S. Irwin Crookes a total sum of £0500 has been promised in contributions to an endowment fund, and the Government has thus been relieved of its responsibility by that amount. It has been assured that if it will subsidise the promised private donations at the rate of £2 for £1 the endowment fund will be sufficient to enable the school to carry on. Such a subsidy would not be a considerable price to pay for an institution which is established, has proved its usefulness and has no rival nearer than Christchurch.
