SONG COMPETITION.

AWARDS TO AUCKLAND

ADJUDICATOR'S REMARKS

To an Aucklander. Mr. Herbert H. Hulett, of 55, Norman's Hill Road, Onehunga, the second prize of £5 in a coinpetition for original songs bv New Zealand" composers lias been awarded. Mr. Hulett's song was fittingly named "On the Shores of Manukau." Last year also lie won the second prize with his "Away in the Forest."

The competition was organised by the Wellington Competitions Society, and the entries were judged by Professor Heinze, of the Melbourne Conservatorium. The first prize, Lord Bledisloe's Cup and £15, went to Mr. G. Mcßeth, of Wanganui, whose composition, "All on a Summer's Day," was considered by the adjudicator to show real ability in the art of song-writing. Mr. Hulett's song showed "nice natural harmonic treatment," and was summed up as "a pleasing song." To an Aucklander also went the third award, won by Theodora Bennett with "0 Glorious Day." Entries which gained honourable mention were those of Mr. B. R. O'Brien and Mr. Hamilton Dickson, both of Wellington, and Mr. A. G. Burnsey, of Christcliurch.

The compositions, remarked the judge, showed a standard better than that of last year. /'Unfortunately," he adds, however, "a lot of the composers had forgotten that the most important factor in musical composition is that it should be original. Too many songs were derivative and therefore lacking in this important feature."
