AUSTRALIANS WIN.
MATCH AT WELLINGTON. COMBINED SIDE OUTCLASSED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Overshadowing the opposition in ever v. department, the Australian Rugby League team to-day defeated a combined team from Wellington, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, and Canterbury, by 45 points (eleven tries, six goals) to 31 ijjeveu tries, five goals;. The ground was 'iiurcl and dusty. ' At one stage a win by a much wider margin looked likely for the Australians. Renewed vigour on the part of the forwards in the late stages, however, brought results for the home side and made the sscores closer. The Australians showed splendid combination. They secured the ball from the great majority of scrums in the earlier stages of the match, and it was not' until the local side learned to adopt the Australian tactics that the share was more nearly equalised. In strong contrast to the visitors the> combined team was weak in combination, both back and forward. Credit, however, must be given to individual players for fine displays. AU&kLANI> CONTROL BOARD. REPRESENTATIVE TEAM PRAISED. At the meeting of the Auckland Rugby League Board of Control lust evening, Mr. G. Grey Campbell paid, tribute to the fine effort of Auckland in the contest with Australia. " With a little more finish I think we would have won," continued the chairman. " Taking everything into consideration, however, the Auckland team did splendidly. One noted player has said the first 20 minutes was as fast as anything he had known. We learnt something, and no doubt it was a great/-intro-duction for tlie first Test." Mr. Rukutai said the Australians were a bit more polished. The Auckland forwards were lighter, but he considered the Australian method of hooking was illegal. Mr. Campbell read congratulatory cablegrams from Mr. H. R. Miller, secretary of tho Australian Board of Control, and expressed the hope that New. Zealand would be seen to advantage next Saturday. A telephone message from Wellington advised the board that the match betweeen Australia and the combined team was the best exhibition of the code seen in Wellington. The fine, play of Lilbiirne was extolled, and also that of Atkins and the Hawke's Bay winger R. E. Srtiith. It was decided that Mr. Alf. Adams set of gold medals be awarded to the championship winners, to whose last year caps the year's dates could be added. The Mount Albert Club reported that us senior team's visit at the week-end to Hawke's Bay was most successful, laradale being defeated by 22—13, after a fine exhibition, for the I.X.L. Cup-. At one stage Taradale led by five points, but the visitors finished strongly. The forward Gunning stayed in Jsapier, owing to having a broken collar-bone. . After the board had dealt with a school matter the chairman took the opportunity to congratulate the Green Lane Junior Club upon its sound organisation and progress in the district.
