THE COMMONWEALTH BANK
When, in my letter, I said the Commonwealth Bank started without capital I made a plain statement of fact. Are the figures quoted by Mr. J. Hislop in his letter of the 18th inst. the figures of 1012—the year the Commonwealth Bank started? Even taking those figures what do they amount to? Not one shilling of capital (subscribed), but merely a guarantee of the Commonwealth Government of Australia. That is all a State bank requires; and that is all the Commonwealth Bank is—a State bank, owned and guaranteed by the Government of the Commonwealth, (lie only State bank in the British Empire. Its many advantages and great services rendered to the people of Australia are too well known to be dilated upon here. May I again ask the question: Why not such a bank in New Zealand ? J.C.
