THE FIRST TEST.

NEW ZEALAND SIDE. A STRONG COMBINATION. New Zealand will field a particularly strqng thirteen against the Australians in the first Test, which is to be played nt Carlaw Park next Saturday. The New Zealand side will be as follows: — Full-back. —A. E. Cooke (Auckland). Three-quarters.—L. Brown (Auckland), W. Tittleton (Waikato), E. , Mincham (Auckland). Five-eighths.—C. Kay (Auckland), S. Prentice (Auckland). Half-back. —R. Powell (Auckland). Forwards. —J. Calder (West Coast), L. Hutt (Auckland), J. Laird (Auckland), W. Glynn (West Coast), C. Satherly (Auckland), J. Anderson (West Coast). Cooke was the obvious choice for fullback, although on Saturday some of his kicking was not as accurate as usual. The three-quarter line is strong and thrugtful. Brown and Mincham both proved. their worth on. Saturday, while W. Tittleton, the Waikato man s lias been playing consistently throughout the season, and can be relied on to give a good account of himself at centre. Kay and Prentice have played themselves into the team for their ability to watch the nippy visitors. With a bit more speed in sending the ball along they should give the three-quarters the opportunities they will require if the Australians are to be closely ~ Powell is not the ideal man foi" the half-back position/ but behind the strong pack that has been chosen he should open up the play well.

The forwards are a promising lot, possessing speed, resource and brawn. The three West Coasters, Calder, Glynn and Anderson should add the weight necessary if New Zealand is to see a greater measure of the ball than Auckland did on Saturday. They are a trio of hardworkers who are always going as hard at the . end as at the start. Hutt, Laird and Satherly were always conspicuous on Saturday, and np one will dispute their right to inclusion in the team. The fine performance of all these forwards in ther mter-Islahd match will be remembered. Generally speaking .the team is well 'balanced; 1 '; and "euppoyters of the code can look-forward-to seeing it fully extend the best: -'thirteen ■that' the visitors can ■ field.
