LOCAL BODIES.

HOWICK TOWN BOARD. A meeting of the Howick Town Board was held last evening, the chairman, Mr. H. A. Bub hell, presiding. Public Cemetery. —Acting on the recommendation of the reserves committee it waa decided to renew the whole of the fence surrounding the cemetery, at an estimated cost of approximately £30. _ General Roads—The works committee reported that most of tlxe district roads had been redressed with shell, and were in first-class order. Work would be started on the formation of Wellington Street in the near future. The clerk was instructed to apply to the Unemployment Board for authority to expend the sum of £150 in extending the culvert at the foot 'of Uxbridge Road, and filling in the depression. „ Accounts—Accounts totalling £600 were passed for payment.

OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Otahuhu Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, presiding. Petrol Tax. —Requests were received from the Takapuna and Newmarket Borough Councils asking for support to their protest to the Prime Minister; regarding the meagre allowance made by. the Main Highways Board in maintaining main roads and requesting an increase from the petrol tax. The town cleric explained that Newmarket and Otahuhu were the only two boroughs that had not received assistance in the construction of their main highways and that for several years they had been promised a share of the petrol tax, but nothing had come of it. It was decided to support the protest and that the Mayor should go with any deputation sent to Wellington.

Bert Palmer Memorial. —It was decided, to accept an invitation to the unveiling of a memorial to the late Bert Palmer in the Otahuhu Cemetery at 2.30 next Sunday. The late Bert Palmer was a prominent member o£ the Otahuhu Rugby Football Club and a New Zealand representative. . Drainage Scheme. —The Auckland and Metropolitan Drainage Board forwarded a copy of its report, and after the Mayor had explained the it was decided to take no action. Correspondence was also received from the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association on the proposed drainage scheme. The association said it was not satisfied that the jiroposed alteration to the present system will ensure that there will be no pollution of the water and the beaches, particularly those adjacent to the eastern, part of the harbour and MStuihi Island. The Mayor said this question wonld , reported on bv the experts engaged by the Drainage Board and comment was neede less. The correspondence was received. Ladies' Rest Room—A letter was received from a firm of solicitors standi, their clients, with a view to an amicable settlement of the matter, were prepared without prejudice to approve ox the erection of the proposed building so lon as it was not less than o2tt from their boundary. The letter was reierred to the works committee for a report. Heavy Traffic Fees. —A request "was received from the Onehunga Borough Council asking if Otahuhu was in favour of the proposed allocation of the heavy traffic fees as suggested by the Commissioner of Transport. It was decided to reply that the matter was still under consideration. The Auckland City Council also advised that it was strongly opposed to the present method of distribution o£ heavy traffic fees and would continue to press for a revision of the regulations dealing with the matter. It offered, in view of the fact that a revision _o£ the legislation was under consideration, to distribute this year on the 6ame basis as last year if other local bodies were agreeable. It was decided to accept this offer.

Morningside Tunnel. —It was decided to take no action when the Northern Suburban Railway and Highway League requested support for this project. Plunket Society Room. —It was decided to inform the" local Plunket Society brancli that the council was unable to include a Plunket room in the rest room and was unable to grant the use of a room in the council chambers, as there wat no suitable room. Auckland Milk Council Amendment Bill.—lt was decided to oppose this bill and the Mayor was authorised to t&KQ such steps as he considered neccssary. Road Improvements.—lt was decided to tar seal the shoulder of the Great Sonth Road from Portage Road to Hma Road on one side and from Huia Road to Station Koad both sides full width.
