ROWING.

AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION. REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. The report and balance-sheet to be presented at the annual general meeting of the Auckland Rowing Association next Saturday night records another satisfactory season's operations and the officials must be congratulated for the:r efforts (under very difficult conditions), which have definitely advanced the sport througaoiit the Auckland Province. Special reference has been made to the deaths of Messrs. 11. W. Hudson, president, and G. Ilogan, vice-president, and probably no other kindred sport has received such a loss in the one season. These gentlemen were not only two of the strongest supporters, but were ever ready to give their advice to the Auckland Rowing Association. The sympathies of the association and kindred clubs are extended to the relatives of the deceased. During the year the office of chairman was ably filled by Mr. A. C. Norden, who left a few months ago on a health trip to England and Europe, Mr. Herdman being clccted actingchairman in the meantime. Levies and subscriptions were paid by. twelve clubs, with 374 oarsmen affiliated to the association. Country clubs are still strong and it is regretted that so far Whakatane has not been able to link up again. Opotiki achieved success this year with their heavy maiden crew, winning the A.R.A. championship and the Dewar Shield. The 1934-35 season closes with an overdraft of £24 14/4. This is an improvement in the cash position of £29 1/4. the amount of the overdraft twelve months ago being £53 15/9. This year £31 S/4 is the amount which has neen charged against the revenue account as the cost of upkeep, etc., on the eights. Furthermore, £26 4/5 was the cost to the association of the interprovincial eight-oar contest at Dunedin, which amount does not include the cost of travelling expenses, which were borne by the Tauranga Club The total amount expended on the eights this year by the association was £57 12/0. Of "outstanding interest to the rowing world was the New Zealand championship regatta held on March 2 at the Whau Creek under the control of the A.R.A. To facilitate the work of the regatta and keep the affairs of the A.R.A. separate the New Zealand Championship Regatta Club was formed with an executive of members of the A.R.A. The' Auckland provincial championships were decided at Hamilton, with the exception of the maiden pairs, which were decided at Ngaruawahia, while the handicap single sculls event was rowed at the New Zealand championships. £427 was the amount of the donations at regattas apportioned as followsTauranga regatta, £90; Hamilton regatta, £96; New Zealand championship regatta, £167; Ngaruawahia regatta, £74. , , , • The interprovincial eights race was staged at Dunedin and the Tauranga Rowing Club represented this association. A.R.A. is under an obligation to the Tauranga Club for- representing the province, the cost of travelling expenses of the crew being borne by the Tauranga Club Even with this easing of the expenses the association paid out £26 4/5 covering nomination, freight, ctc.
