SPRING RACING.

AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB. THE OPENING DAY. PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW. The spring racing season In Auckland irill be inaugurated to-morrow, when the Avondale Jockey Club will commence their meeting. Excellent fields are engaged in all events, the smallest being in the Cup, but what this lacks numerically is made up for in quality, and the issue appears very open. If the weather remains fine the track should be in splendid order. The betting will be the old system—7s per cent tnd 23 per cent. A Big Field. The biggest field of the day is engaged in the Maiden Plate, an event run at special weights over seven furlongs. Teak was placed on two occasions at the last Avondale meeting, running third to Tonnerre and Triune in the Oakley Handicap and occupying a similar position to Gay Sheik and Tonnerre in the Nursery Handicap on the second day. Flood Tide was second to Persian Lady in the Midsummer Handicap at the Auckland Christmas meeting and was third in both the two-year-old events at the last Takapuna meeting. He has been galloping well recently. Jewelled Girdle was second to Prince Acre in the Jcrvois Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Great Northern meeting and finished in a similar position to Silver Brier in the Auckland Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting. Valspcar has been galloping well, as has also Enlightenment and Etcetera. Te Broney was fourth in the Auckland Handicap, one mile, at the l'akuranga meeting, which was her first start, and she should again be hard to beat. Of the others Vera Acre, Hope Lass, Supreme Ruler and Orefield may be the best. The favourites may be

JEWELLED GIRDLE EX LI GHTENMENT. TE BRONEY The Jumpers. Greek Gold and Mangu King are at the head of the Kingsland Hurdles. The former has yet to make his debut in public in this department, but he has been schooling well at Takanini, and would only need to jump correctly to be in the money. Mangu King won the hurdle events at the Bay of Plenty meeting last season and was also placed in a steeplechase at Paeroa. Benighted won both hurdle races at the Dargavillc fixture and was placed on other occasions. Lord Val, like Greek Gold, is also to have his first race in this department. He was a good performer up to a middle distance on the flat and has been jumping well in his schooling tasks at Ellerslie. Soloist won well at, Wanganui and was second the following' day. He should be troublesome. JDelram lias had some experience over hurdles, having run third to Stanchion and Jayson in the Penrose Hurdles at tiie Great Northern meeting last year. Uf the others Gascelle, Prince Val, Chief Emerald and Tea Chat appeal most. A preference may be shown ior SOLOIST LORD VAL DELRAIN. The Champion Plate. Fourteen figure in the Champion Hack Plate. Hikutaia started on two occasions last season, running third in the Gordon Handicap at Ellerslie to Kelly and Tray Bit, and was also second over six furlongs it New Plymouth. The previous season lie accounted for the Hack Cup, one mile md a quarter, at liotorua. If he begins well he should be in the picture. Royal Dance started on eight occasions last season, winning the Trial Stakes, five furlongs, at Stratford, and the Elstow Handicap, six furlongs, at Te Aroha, while ie was also placed at Matamata. Maine won at Masterton over six furlongs and 63 yards and at Woodville and Hawke's Bay over a similar distance, and at Dannevirke over seven furlongs, last season. Keith Lu annexed two six-furlong races at the Bay of Plenty meeting last season and was placed on other occasions. Barn Dance iras a good performer up to a mile and a quarter, while Nun Nicer was successful over a mile at the Avondale spring fixture last season and also won over seven furlongs at Waikato and Ohinemuri. He has been galloping well at Takanini. Caliente is going well at Ellerslie, while Flitacre was successful in the Maiden Race, six furlongs, at Wanganui last week. Plato, Flcetwind and Tonnerre were good two-year-olds last season, and the latter won at the Taranaki Hunt meeting recently. Callisto and Lady Ruler should be improved by their efforts at Wanganui. Most money may come for TONNERRE PLATO NUN NICER. The Chief Event.

The chief event of the day is the Avondale Cup, for which nine are carded. Kiltowyn has done a lot of good work •ince he ran third in the Jellicoe Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting at Ellerslie, and if the going is firm he should be troublesome. Kelly was brilliant three-year-old l<*ißl season and won the Autumn Handicap with 8.5 on this course last season. He has also been working well and will be in demand. Senior may not be quite ready, but Engi, after his end-to-end victory in the Jellicoe Handicap at Pakuranga, will be hard to beat. Knight of Australia ran a great race in the same event. Gay Rose ian two sterling races at the last Avondale spring meeting, finishing second to Sporting Blood and Kelly respectively in the chief event each day. She was also second to Lord Val in the Cornwall Handicap. King Key won the Whau Handicap of a mile and a quarter at the Avondale autumn meeting and the President s Handicap of similar distance at the ic Kuiti meeting at Te Rapa, while later he was third in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie. Master Norval disappointed at the Pakuranga meeting, while Bronze Tray has lot raced for a long time. Xhe best backed may be KELLY ENGI KILTOWYN. The Two-year-old Classic. The Avondale Stakes is the first two-year-old classic event of the season, and there are a number engaged who have little to their credit. Notium, who comes from Taranaki, is said to be very speedy, While Surella won a division of the JLwo-year-old Parade at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Anion has been at Takanini, and half-brother to Amnion Ra is not without prospects. Gallio was second in the Debutante Stakes at Wanaganui last Saturday and snould be improved. The favourites may be GALLIO NOTTUM SUKEIiiA. - -

The Flying StaKes. lhc scratching of Gipsy Moth has left at the head of the list for the I'lying Stakes. He is a fine sprinter when at his best, but he may need a race, liadesman is stated to be an uulikely starter, but Prince Acre, after his form f, " l ' eat Northern meeting and the \\ ellmgton fixture a few weeks later, will have plenty of friends if he goes to the barrier. Heritage performed well as a two-year-old Jast season, and after his success at Marton he will not lack failsupport if started. Boughal and Princess Star have plenty of pace, while Galilee, after her two excellent efforts at Wanganui, will not be neglected. Scotland is a good sprinter, who is not without prospects, while Star Artist lias been going well at Te Rapa. The public may favour HERITAGE GALILEE PRINCE ACRE. Tho Swanson Handicap. Alchemic, after liis dual success at Wanganui, which included the Guineas, now has pride of place in the Swanson Handicap, and should be hard to beat, ■but it is stated he may not start. Miss Lu was a very useful performer up to seven furlongs last season. Con Fuoco only had one race last season. Huskie was successful over six furlongs at Stratford last season and was also placed on other occasions. Tutor was second to On Parade, one mile, at the Great Northern meeting, and Orac won .a maiden event over six furlongs at Feilding and was in the money on eight other occasions. Salon won the Soutra Hunters' Flat, one mile and a quarter, at Hastings. Te Hai is very speedy and was successful in a couple of sprint races last season. King Tut won over seven furlongs at Pukekohe last March and is looking and working well. Air Lassie accounted for the Onewa Handicap at the Takapuna summer meeting, while Light Comedy showed plenty of speed as a two-year-old last season. The principal fancies 'in the absence of Alchemic may be TUTOR

» AIR LASSIE. SALON. The Concluding Event.
