TROUBLE IN SHOP.
MAN AND WIFE ASSAULTED.
LAPSE OF MEMORY PLEADED.
Charges of drunkenness in Victoria Street, mischief by wilfully damaging shop fittings to the extent of 7/<>, and assaulting Florence Mazuran and George Mazuran, were brought against Frank Cartman, aged 41, a war pensioner, in the Police Court to-day.
Cartman pleaded guilty to the charges, but said he did not remember what happened on Saturday. Sub-Inspector Fox said Cartman went into a fish shop in Victoria Street at 2.50 on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Mazuran was scrubbing the floor at the time and was alone in her shop. Cartman did not want anything and she asked him to leave, but he refused. Cartman also refused to leave when requested to by Mr. Mazuran, a man with one arm. "Cartman then seized a broom, broke it in three pieces and struck Mrs. Mazuran on the face with his hand, causing her to fall," added Mr. Fox. "He also struck Mr. Mazuran. Cartman is a returned soldier who suffers from shell shock."
"I don't remember what happened," accused told the magistrate.
"Well, there are others who do," said Mr. Hunt. "You had no right to strike a woman and -a man who has only one arm. Drink is no good to you. If you take out a prohibitiori order I will let you off lightly."
"I think that would be. a good idea," said Cartman.
He was fined £2 on one of the charges of assault and ordered to make good the damage done.
