PHOTOGRAPHY'S PART.
IN THE SERVICE OF SCIENCE,
LECTURES AT AUCKLAND.

Considerable interest is being taken in photographic and scientific circles in the two lectures to bo given at the UniT!l ty A CoIIe S c Hell under the auspices of the Auckland Institute this evenin" and to-morrow by Mr. William C. Davies, F.R.P.S., curator of Cawthron Museum and photographer to the Cawthron Institute, Nelson. Mr. Davies ia taking as his subject "Photography in the Service of Science," dealing this evening with photography by visible rays and on the following evening with photography by invisible rays.
Under tho first heading the lecturer will include the work being accomplished in scientific photography with the aid of some of the latest resources provided for the production of records of scientific work, including panchromatic plates, light filters and autochrome plates for colour photography. The second evening will be devoted to photography with infra-red and ultra-violet rays. Both lectures will be illustrated by numerous lantern slides. Many of these have been produced in the ordinary course of work at the Cawthron Institute, while others have been lent by some of the most prominent scientific photographers both in Great Britain and the United States.
Mr. Davies is well known in photographic circles throughout the world, many of his scientific photographs having been hung at the exhibitions of the Royal Photographic Society in London, while his work on the New Zealand flora has been recognised by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, which last year made a liberal contribution towards the carrying out at the Cawthron Institute of the important work of securing photographic records of New Zealand's unique and interesting native flora. Already over 60 of these photographs have been placed in the Museum of Kew Gardens and a selection forwarded to the last exhibition of the Royal Photographic Society was awarded the society's medal for the year. j
