WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

NEW LYNN BIRTHDAY PARTY. New Lynn Women's Institute held its sixth birthday party on Saturday evening. A large gathering of dancers, in plain and fancy dress, were welcomed by the president, Mrs. G. Lawson, who was dressed as Nell Gwynne. A birthday cake, made and decorated in the institute colours by Mrs. Stanley George, was cut by Mrs. Riekerby.

The judging of the fancy costumes was carried out by Mrs. Riekerby and Miss Ayling. The prizewinners were: Prettiest lady, Miss Sinclair (Rio Rita); original lady, Mrs. Pitcher (Christinas tree); comical lady,' Mrs. Malam (Father Christmas); best couple, Mr. Briggs and Mr. Harris (Hayseeds); best man, Mr. Gilliam (Mephistopheles); comical man, Mr. Wadey (clown); original man, Mr. Grieve- (Dora).

Others present in costume were: Mrs. Sarager, Victorian lady; Mrs. Weber, Women's Institute; Mrs. Winship, period lady; Mrs. Grieve, Katinka; Mrs. Stacey, Women's Institute; Mrs. Sinclair, Dresden china lady; Miss V. Howson, period costume; Miss B. August, tropic night; Miss I. Wyle, England, Land of the Free; Miss Atkins, Persian slave.

TE ATATU. Miss Hopper presided over a good attendance at the last meeting. The resignations of Mrs. Harrison, lion, secretary, and Mrs. Anderson, treasurer, were received with regret. The president spoke of tho good work done by tlicee ladies. Mrs. H. Pijacun was elected lion, secretary and treasurer for ensuing months. A demonstration on rug making was given by Mrs. Love. The hostesses were Mesdames Walters, Fitzsimmons and Gatee. GLEN EDEN. The Glen Eden Women's Institute held its usual monthly meeting recently in the Anglican Churcli ball. The president read an interesting report of the Dominion conference, also a letter from the Waikato branch signifying they had accepted the Glen Eden branch as their little sister. The president also gave a demonstration of crepe paper basketmaking. Mrs. Brown was appointed as delegate to attend the A.D.F. annual meeting to be held early in November. A flower competition was won by Mrs. Hill. "A something new from something old" competition was won by Mrs. Werner. The hostesses were Mrs. Le V. Benet and Mrs. G. Strong. TE PUKE. The monthly meeting of the To Puke Women's Institute was held in the St. Andrew's Hall, Mrs. Crowley presiding. Mesdames F. Palmer and Brown were appointed delegates to the bi-annual council meeting to be held in Katikati on September 24. A very interesting lecture was given by Mr. Cameron, ot Tauranga, on "Ferns and Their Culture." The play, "Aunt Jane's Emancipation," was then put on by the dramatic circle. The competition, "Hot Water Bag Covers," bought in a number of articles, both decorative and useful. Mrs. F. Palmer gave an account of a visit to the Blind Institute while at the recent conference in Auckland.

MANGAWEKA. The September meeting was well attended and several visitors were welcomed. Mrs. Ginnane spoke briefly on Miss Spencer's schools for officers, held in Wanganui and Taihape last month. Dr. Jessie Burnett, of Hunterville, gave a talk on the home-treatment of common' ailments. A, competition of jumbled names resulted in a. draw, which was won by Mrs. Nash. The competition for the best buttonhole, to be worked at the meeting was won by Mrs. Moyle, with Mrs. Billington second in the senior section, and Miss B. Bailey in the junior. Hostesses were Mrs. Cherry and Misses Cherry and T. and E. Crawford. ALBANY. Owing to illness, a considerable number of members were absent from the September .meeting. Mrs. Sclioficld, president, sent messages of sympathy to those laid aside. A working bee for the memorial library was arranged. Instead of having a court at the next show, it was thought better to try and improve the entries in the schedule. The delegate to the Dominion conference gave a short report on the remits. Mrs. Brant interested listeners while relating experiences of her life and travels in Rhodesia and the Transvaal. The roll call was either an amusing incident or the worst mistake in cooking. The competition was best arranged vase of spring flowers. HOMAL A full meeting of the Homai Institute was held on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. CaiT nave an address on India. The unique competition, a gift for Christmas, to cost not more than 9d, was won by Mrs. A. Collie.
