ORAKEI MAORI VILLAGE
COSIMETJCE CHAMBER REPORT,
Three schemes for dealing with tlib Orakei Maori village are suggested in a lengthy report which was' presented to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce today by a sub-committee of the chamber net up to go into the question'.
In considering any settlement* of the question the report stated that the legal and moral rights of the following must be kept in view: The Maori interests of the Ngati-Whatuft tribe, particularly the members of the tribe now at Orakei; the Crown; purchasers of allotments at Orakei tinder the Orakei model suburb scheme, and the public (if Auckland.
The three schemes which suggested themselves to the committee were the formation of an Orakei Maori pa upon the 40 acres situated in the Orakei Valley; a ■ model Maori residential quarter 'situated in that portion of the land bounded by the waterfront road and Crescent Road; a park on the land fronting the waterfront road, having a Maori meeting house, Maori museum,
library and similar public buildings, to bo run as far. as possible by Maoris.
The committee's report, which explains that no definite decision has been reached, favours the reserve scheme. It will be given further consideration bv the chamber.
