The Victoria Cross was instituted to reward the gallantry of persons of all ranks in the Army and Navy, on February S, 1850. The Queen conferred the honour on (52 persons, of both services, on June 2li, 1857, and on many of the Indian Army in IS.SS. It carries with it a pension of £10 per annum.
