SPRING RACING.

MARTON JOCKEY CLUB. THE SEASON OPENS. COTTESMOEE WINS CHIEF EVENT. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") MARTON, Saturday. The spring racing season opened at Marton to-day, when the Marton Jockey (3ub held their spring fixture. The weather was beautifully fine, and the course was in. splendid order. There -was a good attendance, the sum of £SSS7 10/ goi"£ through the machine, compared with. £5106 W last year, an increase of £781. After xho Farewell Hack Handicap on Saturday, the judicial committee of the Marton Jockey Club held an inquiry into the running of Gold Gleam, who finished fourth. As a result the jockey L, Clifford was suspended for three months. An inquiry was also held into the falling of- Fleeting Arrow and Bingapoto in the Maiden Race, and, after hearing evidence, the committee decided that the occurrence wa.\ accidental. The two-year-old parade held prior to the first race was disappointing, the only youngster to take part being Waiontrona. a chesnut filly, by Colossus from Just. She sprinted a couple of furlongs with Wyndale. and shaped attractively. A Good Finish. Santoft dropped out of the Otairi Plate, the best backed being . Gainsay and lnvictus. Air Force led out from Gainsay, Wyndale, lnvictus and Royal Papa, and they raced in that order along the back. Entering the straight Air Force, Wyndale and Gainsay were on terms with lnvictus next. In a good finish Wyndale did best to win by a head from Air Force, with Invictus a neck away. Royal Papa was next, with Gainsay last. Two Horses Fall. Hard Times was the only defection in the Maiden, most money coming for Corroboree, Donegal and Mesurina. The early leaders were Shu, Prevail, Going Gay, Huntsman's Chorus and Donegal. Shu led along the back from Going Gay, Donegal, Mesurina, Jean Batten and Prevail. Turning for home Going Gay and Shu were on terms, then came Jean Batten, Donegal, Mesurina and Chief Ranger. Shu did best to win by a neck" from Going Gay, with Cloudy Bay two lengths away." Corroboree, Donegal, Mesurina, Chief Ranger and Earl Colossus were next. Ringapoto and Fleeting Arrow fell. All The Way. Headland wsfs not saddled- up for the Hack Hurdles, and Clarion Call, Swift and Sure and Kaola carried most money, the first-named leading all the way. Passing the stand Clarion Call was followed by Ganpat, Gallivanter, Kaola, Swift and Sure and Spender. There was no change along the back', and Clarion Call led into the straight from Ganpat, Gallivanter, Kaola, Swift and Sure and Miss Pango. Clarion Call went on to win by four lengths from Kaola, with Ganpat two and a half lengths away. Gallivanter, Miss Pango and Swift and Sure followed in that order. . Lady Wessex was pulled up along the. back. Finished Well. All started in the Tutaenui Hack, most money coming for Bantry and Windward," and when they had settled down Landlubber was attended by Bantry, Celerrimus, Windward, All Spirit and Hunting Cat. Celerrimus took charge across the top from Landlubber, Hunting Cat, Bantry and Windward. There' was little change into the straight, where Bantry finished strongly to beat Hunting Cat by half a length,- with Waipiro two lengths further back. Windward, AH Spirit and Chaste were next. Favourite Loses Rider. The five acceptors went to the post in the Marton Handicap, Royal Banquet being a hot favourite, with Tres Sec also in demand. Backers of the favourite were soon out of suspense, as he lost his rider at the rise of the barrier. Cottesmore began best and led all the way, being followed in the early part by Lavington, Lapel and Tres Sec. The order was the same along the back, where Cottesmore had a lead of three lengths, and he showed the way into the straight from Tres Sec, Lavington and Lapel. Cottesmore was not troubled to win by two and a half lengths from Tres Sec, with Lapel two lengths back. Lavington was next. Gay Boy Scores. Santoft and Pukepapa dropped out of the Spring Hack-Handicap. When betting ceased Gay Boy, Trackman and Tauniau had most friends. The early leaders were Gay Boy, Trackman and Midacre, but along the back Windward had charge from Gay Boy, Tauniau, Midacre and Wyndale." Taumau and Midacre were together entering the straight, followed by Windward* Wyndale, Royal Papa and Gay Boy. Over the last furlong Gay Boy finished -solidly under pressure to beat Taumau by a neck, with Midacre a length and a half back. Windward, Trackman, Wyndale and Royal Papa were next. Favourite Defeated. There were no withdrawals in the Bailway Handicap, in which Slippery, Curie and Heritage were the popular fancies. When they were let go Passion Fruit. .Slippery, Royal Bengal and Heritage began best. The order along the back was Royal Bengal and Heritage, on terms, with Passion Fruit, Slippery, Catalogue and Limulus next, slippery dropped back entering the straight, the order of the others being unchanged. Heritage went on to win easily by three lengths from Passion Fruit, who beat Slippery (who had come again) by a long neck. Curie, Catalogue, Limulus, Royal Bengali and West Tor followed. A Narrow Margin.Baznine and Grand Score carried most money in the Farewell Handicap, with which the. meeting concluded. .Grand Score was soon in front, followed by Bodyline, and they were followed into the straight by 'Bazaine, Matrimony, Surprise Item." Celerrimus and. (.old Gleam. In a great finish Bodyline beat Grand Score by a short head, with Bazaine two lengths away third. Then eame Oold Gleam, Matrimony, Surprise Item and Celerrimus.
