HOUSING SCHEME.
The City Council's proposed housing scheme, especially m relation to the erection of blocks of fiats, is commendable. However, the pulliii" down of shun property, although very desil° able, entails much hardship. For instance, many of the small four-roomed houses that arc to be demolished average 2/0 per room, or a rental of 10/ per week. These dwellings in the main are occupied by relief workers, old age pensioners and the aged generally. Owing to conditions over which these people have no control they cannot possibly pav rental of anything like IS/ per week; this i*s the minimum rent asked for, I believe, under the City Council's scheme Unless some provisions are set aside for these unfortunate people, it simply means further hardship, congestion and overcrowding 4s we are all fully aware, there is a big shortage of small four or five roomed houses in or near the city. Perhaps the City Council may give the other side of the picture at least* some consideration. HARRY WOODRUFFE.
