DUCK EGGS CHEAPER
The improvement in the weather has resulted in a better demand for most varieties of fruit. At to-day's auctions apples were in fair demand, although pears were slow of sale. Oranges were selling well, and there was a better demand for Island tomatos, while hothouse tomatoes fetched slightly higher prices than they did last week. Lemons were still a glut on the market, however, poor lines being unsaleable. ... The Aoiangi brought a shipment of I'iji banana*), kumaras and cucumbers, and also onions, while a small shipment of Queensland pineapples arrived by the Mara in a to-day. Quotations:— Apples: Ballarat, 7/ to 8/; Doherty, 0/ to 8/; Koine Beauty, 8/ to ()/; Delicious, 7/ to 0/0; Stunners, 6/ to 9/; G. Smith, 6/ to !)/. Tears: Coles and Nelis, three-quarter cases 8/ to 9/, bushel 9/ to 10/; 1\ Barry, 7/ to 8/. Passions: 4/ to 10/ case. Plums: Californian, 17/ crate. Oranges: South Australian, 16/6 to 22/; Island, 15/6 to 20/. Lemons: Cured, 4/ to 5/; others, 1/6 to 3/. Grapefruit: New Zealand, large, 5/ to 0/; small. 4/ to 4/0. Tomatoes: Island repacks, 6/6 to 7/ case; hothouse, 5d to 10d lb. Bananas: 14/ to 21/. Tree tomatoes: Black, 7/ to 7/6; red, 3/ to 6/. Pines: Queensland, 14/ to 16/0. Coconuts: 14/ sack. Vegetables. The first new potatoes from Pukekohe arrived on the market this morning, previous supplies having come from Oratia and Ranui. They were in fair condition. There was a shortage of caulillower and cabbage to-day owing to the cold weather, and prices rose Slightly. Rhubarb was in fair supply, and w;is meeting with a good demand. AH root vegetables were tairly plentiful, and are fetching good prices, though kumaras so d a little cheaper than they did last week. Quotations:—Potatoes, new No. 1 2d to 3%d per lb, iNo. 2 Id to VM, Southern white 9/0 to 10/0 per cwt, red 10/6; swedes local 2/3 to 3/, Ohakune 3/b to 4/ bag; onions, local 11/ to 12/, California!! 20/ to 21/ bag; kumarae, Island 10/ to 11/ cwt, local 3/0 to 4/ bag; cabbages, large Hacks 10/ to 12/, small 3/6 to 0/b sack, on benches 2/ to 3/0 dozen; cauliflowers, 4/ to 7/6 sack, on benches 2/ to 3/ dozen; pumpkins. 5/ to 7/6 cwt; cucumbers, 4/ to 6/ dozen; carrots, Od to Od dozen; parsnips, 1/6 dozen; beet, good young, 1/ to 1/3 dozen; turnip*, young, 1/ dozen: radish, Od to Od dozen; spring onions, 3d to 6d bundle; spinach, 1/ to 1/6 dozen; leeks, 2/ to 3/ dozen; French beans, l/o to 1/9 bag; lettuce, 2/ to 5/ case; cooking celery, Cd to 1/ bundle; dessert celery, 1/6 to i' 6 bundle; rhubarb, 2/ to 3/6 dozen; asparagus, 1/6 to 2/ bundle.
Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply ot poultry was medium, and the demand was very keen for table birds. The prices paid for hens show a rise; other prices unaltered. Selling rates were as follow:— Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 4/ to 0/b each- not prime. 2/0 upwards; light breeds, prime, 3/ to 4/; not prime, 1/0 upwards. Fat roosters: Heavy breeds, prime, 2/6 to 3/6; light breeds, 2/ to 2/0. Fat hens: Heavy breeds, 3/6 to 4/6; light breeds. 3/ to 3/i). Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 3/6 to 4/0: smaller, 1/0 upwards; light breeds, best. 3/ to 4/; smaller, 1/6 upwards. Drakes: Young, prime, 2/0 to 30; smaller, 1/0 upwards: old, 1/9 to 2/9. Ducks: Young, 3/ to 3/9; old. 1/9 to 2/9. Turkeys: liens 5/0 to 0/0; gobblers, 8/ to 14/. Cockerel chicks: Heavy breeds, 4d to 1/: light broods. Id to 10d. Guinea fowls: 3/ to 3/0. Eggs and Butter. Duck o},'gH are down one penny from last week, and hen eggs are unchanged. Latest wholesale quotations are: —Hen: First grade, 1/0% dozen: B grade, UMid; C grade, (Hid. Duck: First grade, llfcd; B grade, lOMsd; C grade, BV4d.
