VALVE CLEARANCE.
If a motor car engine is to be kept running smoothly the clearance of the valves must be checked at regular intervals. Badly adjusted valves not only impair the efficiency of the power unit and produce a considerable amount of noise, but they may cause damage to the valves and seatings. In trying to make the valves operate quietly, however, do not make the mistake of" leaving too little clearance, especially if the adjustment is made when the engine is cold, as this may result in the valves not seating properly, causing loss of compression, and generally upsetting the smooth running of the engine. It may also cause the valve faces to become burned and pitted.
