WINTER BOWLING.

MATCHES ON SATURDAY.

TOURNAMENTS PLANNED. LARGE GATHERINGS IN VIEW. (By TRUNDLER.) Unpleasant squalls on Saturday morning turned to bright sunshine early enough for the winter greens to be in nice con-, dition for the afternoon's fixtures, but the counter-attractions at Eden Park and Alexandra Park must have kept a good many bowlers away, for the winter greens were not at all heavily patronised. The cold wind was strong enough to interfere with accuracy on the exposed greens, but otherwise the afternoon was enjoyable and the lengthening days allowed all the matches to be finished long before sunset.

The second day's play in the twoSaturday tournament at Balmoral started early enough for the remaining two rounds to be finished and the tics in each section played oft'. In section A three rinks tied with four wins and one loss, after which A. Moon (Te J'apapa) beat K. Buckle (Hillsboro , ), the bye going to W. Denison (Balmoral), who then defeated Moon. Two rinlcs tied in section B and W. H. Keatley (Rocky Nook) defeated T. H. Stringer (ITillsboro , ) in the play-oii and will meet Dcnison next Saturday week, September 14.

On the following two Saturdays, Sepber 21 and 28, Balmoral will hold a twoSaturday tournament and the same dates have been chosen by Mount Eden for a similar event. A week later, September 2S, on the Auckland greens, there will be the annual match between the business men of Queen Street and Karangahape Road, which in actual practice means the whole of the lower part of the city, from Freeman's Bay to Beach Road, against the upper part, from Ponsonby to Newmarket.

A -week later, October 5, the Grammar School old boys will accept the invitation ol the Auckland Bowling Club, given last year, to hold their annual gathering on tiie Auckland greens, when they will doubtless be again joined by the old boys of the other secondary schools. On this occasion the match will be of special intereet, as it will be in the nature of an official farewell to the retiring headmaster of the Auckland Grammar fcvhool, Mr. H. J. D. Mali on. In one way it will differ very materially from the other farewells tendered to Mr. Mahon during the past few weeks, for it is doubtful if a single player who will be present knew him as the headmaster, whereas several knew him as a teacher and nearly half of them knew him as a contemporary scholar.

For the second Saturday in succession the whole of the four sets of inter-club challenge trophies were retained by the holders on Saturday, a decidedly unusual occurrence, and it may be that this is the first time that such a thing has happened.

The Edwin Stars started with quite an even contest, and at the seventh head the score was 6 to 5 in favour of the hoideiu, but by the nineteenth head they had reached an absolutely impregnable position, eo the game virtually stopped then: L. L. Macey, D. Harvey, P. A. Achedon, f>. McMillan (Remuera, holders) 28, v. G. Vazey, S. Wombwell, J. Vincent, S. W. Thompson (Hillsboro", challengers) 10. The deciding head was the eighth, when Hillsboro' were lying second or thud ehot, and McMillan pushed it out for six, although he was taking a big risk, a.s he only had to touch the jack to give three away. After such a shot the holders could not go wrong, for the whole four were playing well, and in the next four heads they lifted 5, 1, '2, 2, to make their score 22 to 5, eo careful play was all that was wanted to maintain the lead. The next challengers are W. Chiplin (Kawhiti) and J. H. Baker (Mount Eden).

The Denison Pins resulted in a fourth win for Theo Walker, again by a rather substantial margin: J. T. Wallett, J. Kewton, G. Clark, T. Walker (Mount Albert, holders) 21, v. C. S. Cave, W. Walker, W. E. Taylor, E. C. Delaraore (Mount Eden) 13. Even the score hardly indicates the mastery of the position maintained by the holders, for although their opponents opened with a single on the first head they replied with a three, and never looked back. At one time they were 17 to C, and some of the numerous spectators on the bank were not quite sure that the visitors really reached the 13 with which they were credited. The next challengers are L. Russell (St. Helier'e), E. Hunt (Takapuna). J. Hodd (Carlton) and S. E. Chappell (Balmoral),, and the holders will again defend their trophies on the Epsom green, the game to begin at 1.30.

The Diggers' Badges also resulted in the fourth win for the holders, the rink from the little club at Buckland'e Beach: W. Doull, G. Place, E. W. Inder, C. E. Brooke 20, v. V. C. Forgie, T. Beanland, U. F. Milnes, P. Wateon (Mount Eden, challengers) 13. The only striking feature in the game w;is one that often happens, that they were 1.3 all on the seventeenth head, after which the visitors did not score again. There was a somewhat similar experience last year, when Buckland'e Beach were the visitors, for on that occasion they were the unfortunates to reach 33 and never score again, whereas the Rocky Nook holders ran up to 2:3. The holders will again play at Ellerelic next Saturday, the challenger being IT. J. Richards (Devonport), followed by W. A. Loram (Rocky Xook).

Everything went well with the holders of the Jordan Pins, good piny and good luck combining to kocp them well ahead all the way. the game ending: T. 11. Geraghty, J- Harlock, E. J. Gatland. S. Vclla (Onehunga, holders) 23. v. A. Cole, J. S. Hardwicke, 11. McKenzie, 11. L. Joll (Ellerelie, challengers) IC. Next Saturday the visitors will bo an Otahuhu rink in charge of S. E. Harper.
