LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

AUCKLAND TOURISTS,

STRONG TEAM FOR SOUTH

The Auckland representative- touring ■team to leave for the south on Thursday evening, and play its iirst match against Wellington on Saturday, is a well-balanced combination, and in its performances should be a credit to the selectors, Messrs. E. K. Asher, W. Mineham and H. Avery, whoee task was complicated by the fact that, while a capable side was demanded the needs of the "Roope Rooster and champion of champions fixture at home had to be studied.

L In 1927., the. Apckland .'team, touted the eouth" under , the management of Messrs. Iyafi: Culpan and R. Doble, and inet with considerable success. That the brilliant style of; play then exhibited was beneficial was demonstrated two years later, when South won the inter-Island game, and gained strong representation in the 1030 eide to Australia. In common with the rest of the Dominion the code has made good strides since in Canterbury and the West Coast, as the recent match illustrated. That is ■why the Auckland Rugby League is taking no risks. The tourists, under the control of Mr. G. Grey Campbell, with Mr. H. Avery as team manager, include six internationalsj four backs— A. E. Cooke, Lou Brown, E. T. Brimble and W. Hassan—' and two forwards — J. Laird and Lou Hutt. Four of these players, in addition to C. Satherley, were engaged in the North Island thirteen, which retained the Courtney Silver Football trophy.

AFFAIRS OF REFEREES. i At the meeting of the Auckland Rugby League Referees' Association last evening, Mr. L. Bull presiding, a letter of appreciation was received from the secretary of the Wellington Rugby League, Mr. R. V. Jones, at the services of Mr. W.
