BILLIARDS.
DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP. The New Zealand amateur championship contest was opened last evening at the Vulcan billiards parlours with a match between M. D. White, the Auckland champion, and E. J. Goodhew, former champion, and resulted in a victory for White by 382 points in a game of 668 up. Strange table and balls caused both players to start badly and White had 17 visits to the table for a total of only 21 points. With useful breaks of 20, 24 and 38 Goodhew held a substantial lead with his score 150 to White's 98. White then found *his touch and with probably the best exhibition of amateur billiards seen in New Zealand dominated the remainder of the game. In three consecutive visits he added to his score by 262 points in beautifully compiled breaks of 82, 89 and 92, each of which seemed a certainty to top the coveted century. The balls were now running unkindly for Goodhew who, however, $ot in a useful run of 49, to which White replied immediately with breaks of 44 and 48. With a big lead, White took no chances with his opponent and a few cues later ran to his points with a top of the table break of 90 unfinished, with the balls in such favourable position that he would have probably succeeded in breaking his New Zealand record of 150 had the length of the game permitted. The finishing scoree were: White 666, Goodhew 284. The winner's best efforts were 21, 38, 82, 92, 89, 44, 48 and 90 unfinished. Goodhew's best were 20, 20, 24, 38 and 49. The game tp-nigbt is between E. W. Warren, three times nolder of the title, and J. Donohue, who reached the final in the Auckland open championship last month.
