SAM THE PIG.
STIR IN ENGLAND. , COMMON'S HONOURS HIM. (Special.—By Air Mall.) LONDON, August 10. Tin; arrival of Sam, the little performing pig from Australia, has occasioned far more notice than the average Australian reaching this country. Tht Ministry of Agriculture even relaxed its Ugliest regulations when ii. heard about Sam's cleverness, because the little pig was in the best of health, ar.d also because he would get out of practice if he spent a long time in quarantine. The Ministry, accordingly, shut him away for only 20 days. This decision has led to Sam's being mentioned on the Order Paper of the House of Commons —a hitherto unheardof distinction for a single pig! Sam belongs to Miss Jane Ayr and Mr. Eddie Leslie, tlie variety artiste. He was bought for them in New South Wales by Mr. Geoffrey Hope, Miss Ayr's husband. Mr. Hope said: "Sam will 'call' Mr. Leslie in the morning by jumping on to his bed. he will 'speak' at the telephone, and sit down to breakfast and display perfect manners. His diet still consists mainly of condensed milk, but he also eats brown bread and lettuce. Three times a week he is bathed and massaged; he has a beautiful beigecoloured 'coat.' with nigger brown markings, and this is always kept carefully brushed and combed."
