ASSAULT CHARGE.
QUARREL IN WORKSHOP. (By Telegraph. —Pross Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A motor mechanic. Richard Edward Barrett, was charged in the Magistrate's Court to-day with assault, causing actual bodily harm. He pleaded not guilty and "was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. He said ho acted in self-defence. The injured man. a garage proprietor named Margolionth, gave evidence regarding a dispute that arose between himself and accused. He went into Barrett's workshop to remind him of a block and tackle that he had borrowed, but Barrett said he had returned it. An argument ensiled, and when witness called Barrett a liar the latter struck him in the face, knocking him down. When he rose Barrett struck him again. It was alleged that as a result of the encounter Margolionth lost an eye.
