TWO NOMINEES.

RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS

J. D. LEWIS AND E. H. SEALY. PROMINENT GRADUATES. Two nominees for the 1935 Rhodes scholarships were chosen 'by the Professorial Board of the Auckland University College this morning. They are Mr. J. D. Lewis and Mr. E. H. Scaly. The selected candidates from all the University Colleges will go before the central selection committe, over which the Governor-General, Lord Galway, presides, in Wellington.

John Derek Lewis, who is 21 years of age, was educated at King's School, Renniera, King's College, Middlemore, and the Auckland University

College. At college he was first in form from 1926 to 1928, and was dux in 1930. In 1932 he won the University National Scholarship, and was a Maria Blackett scholar and senior scholar in Greek. He graduated B.A. this year.

Mr. Lewis was captain of the King's College first eleven from 1929 to 1931, captain of the combined secondary schools' team from 1929 to 1930, an Auckland junior representative in 1930 and 1931, and captain in 1931. He was captain of the first fifteen at King's College, and later at the University College he worked up to the senior A team. In athletics he set up the unbeaten 440 yards junior record at the combined secondary schools' sports. He is also a good tennis player, having won the King's College doubles championship. He is president of the Auckland University College's Students' Association.

Eldred Hutchinson Sealy, who is 22 years of age, was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and the Auckland University College. He won the John Williamson Scholarship and the J. C. Macky prize and obtained a credit pass in the University Entrance Scholarship. He graduated M.Sc. with first-class honours in mathematics last year. Mr. Sealy's sporting activities cover a wide field, and include football, cricket, tennis, rowing, swimming, yachting and athletics. He is a member of the 18th Battery. Last year he was a junior football representative, and this year he was a tournament representative. He is interested in music, literature and drama, and is a licentiate of the Associated Board of the Royal College of Music, London. He is chairman of the social committee at the Training College.
