RIFLE WORKED BY GAS.
BRITISH ARMY'S NEW DESIGN. LONDON, August 11. The "Weekly Dispatch" says that after tests of five British and two foreign rifles the War Office has adopted a new service rifle which is of British design. It is operated by gas, is selfloading and fires 50 aimed shots a minute. Virtually it is a light machinegun. The issue of the weapon to the British forces will cost £3,000,000, necessitating a Supplementary Estimate.
