THE WOOING OF ROTORUA.
To adapt one of the loveliest of lyrics, who is Rotorua,.that all our swains commend her? Six candidates, with a possibility of a seventh, are asking if she is kind as she is fair, for beauty lives with kindness. Is it her beauty or her wonder that attracts —the jewelled chains of lakes or the astonishing phenomenon of Pohutu? If there are six or seven candidates now, there may be, as the "Evening Post" remarks, sixty by election day, and even the safety valve of Kerapiti Blowhole will not be sufficient to relieve the pressure. The controversy within the Democrat Party rivals Rotorua's geysers both in liveliness and in heat, but displays a streak of humour that the thermal regions cannot show. The explanation of Mr. Davy, the party organiser, is a gem of ingenuity, but it will not stop inconsiderate citizens from asking questions. The "Democrat organisation" is to settle differences. The country is still waiting to be told what that organisation is, whether it is much more than Mr. Davy himself. Meanwhile the wooing of Rotorua by platoons or companies should cause the Government to be a little more interested in electoral reform.
